HAPPY NEW YEAR!
While some people enjoy the challenge, I am not one for setting lofty goals or making resolutions on January 1st. I’m just getting on with enjoying my family and friends, and making really good art.
I have a friend whose hobby is hiking, and she asked me why I make art. More precisely, “Why art quilts and not traditional quilts? And why something not more exciting like hiking?” She has a number of beautiful, traditional quilts in her home, all made by family members. I love, respect and have made, and will continue to make traditional quilts periodically, but my passion is exploring my artistic vision of color, shape or line, AND inter-connectedness of people. My motto is “Respect the tradition. Embrace the innovation.”
I love color, balance, exploring visual lines & shapes, but I also love people, relationships, and the way we communicate with each other. As a former English teacher, I have a great love of both written and verbal language. When I write that here, it sounds chaotic, but below this is an example of what I mean:
This is ESCÚCHAME #7 CHATTER on my abstract gallery page, and was created when I felt utterly overwhelmed with phone calls, texts, FB, Instagram, a pinging phone, spam calls, etc. Following the smaller and smaller pieces, you can see when most of the ‘noise’ is filtered out and real conversations are taking place. I love the connections between people: face to face, heart to heart, meaningful conversations. ESCÚCHAME means ‘Listen to me’ and ultimately, that’s what I think most people want and need. Cheerio!
