Messages - Challenge 2
Work has begun on a new “message” quilt and as it does, I am concentrating on using brighter colors and different scale fabrics on this one. Overall, it’s much brighter than my first ‘I am listening’ work, and I am plugging along. I am wanting strips of fabric to be part of any message… fun prints, bolder colors, and different scales of pattern. Not sure yet if I’ll use the same message, or perhaps something more along the lines of encouragement.
For the most part, I’ve received a ton of positive feedback on the ‘Listening’ work, but a number of people have also remarked what a dramatic departure from my previous quilts. I think the simple answer is that this series, no matter how long it continues, is not a series of quilts. This is textile art, strip-pieced, written over, painted, quilted, topped with organza and a message. These are not “quilts” to me in the traditional sense, but something interesting and new. These are strips of 4-6 sewn together, but not a whole fabric yet.
What is art if not pushing the boundaries of what we make?
